Anna T McLeod – In Memory
Artist: Anna T McLeod
Title of Piece: In Memory
About the Piece: Hands on face, protecting the self from the world, blocking out the world, looking inward. This piece was made during my recovery from post-natal depression. Whilst depressed I just wanted the world to stop, to block it all out, to totally detach myself from it. It also represents the chronic pain suffered by both my mother and grandmother. The pose is very much one I would see my grandmother doing when she was overwhelmed both by emotional and physical pain.
About the Artist: This lifecasting represents the inner turmoil I felt after suffering undiagnosed post-natal depression for two years, six years ago. It was a time of hopelessness and darkness that is undescribable. Fortunately, after six months of treatment, I began to lift out of my depression. At this time I discovered art as a form of self-therapy and haven’t looked back really. For many years I continued to use my art practice as a way of expressing inner turmoil and pain. Although it was my story, I knew I wasn’t alone, and that the work would resonate with others. Six years on, I have resolved my inner demons by facing them head on through art making, and have been able to move into more positive territory. I have recently graduated with a BFA(Hons) and am actively setting up an art practice in sculpture and painting, as well as teaching. If it wasn’t for the depresssion, I doubt I would have taken this journey.
